From Stornoway: Follow the A859 heading southwest out of Stornoway and continue along this road for approximately 7.6 miles until you see a sign to turn right onto the A858 towards Calanais (the sign will say “Calanais Standing Stones”). Take that right turn and continue on the A858 for approximately 10 miles until you see a sign to turn left into Calanais village. Follow the local single-track road for a short distance, and you will see the Calanais Visitor Centre ahead on your right.
 

From Tarbert: Follow the A859 heading north towards Stornoway for approx 29miles. You will come to a sign to turn left onto the A858 towards Calanais (the sign will say “Calanais Standing Stones”). Take the left and continue the A858 for approx 10miles until you see a sign to turn left into the village of Calanais. Continue this short local single-track road for a short distance and you will see the Calanais Stones ahead on your right. 

Please Note: Bus services do not run on Sunday in the Outer Hebrides. Please check Comhairle nan Eilean Siar bus timetable for more information on your travel or phone Stornoway Bus Station (+44 1851 704327).

From Stornoway Bus Station: Take the W2 bus to Calanais village. Once off the bus, it’s just a short walk to the stones.

From Tarbert: From Tarbert (Isle of Harris) Bus Station, take the W10/10A bus from Tarbert to Stornoway. You will need to change at Stornoway Bus Station to the W2 bus going to Calanais village. Once you get off, the stones are a short walk from the bus stop. 

There are two routes that lead you to Lewis and Harris on the Outer Hebrides, both ways provide access to the Calanais Stones on the Isle of Lewis.

From Ullapool (Northwest Scotland) to Stornoway (Isle of Lewis) with Caledonian MacBrayne. This is the main connection via ferry. From Stornoway, you can continue your journey to Calanais by car, bus, or taxi (approximately 17.5 miles).

From Uig (Isle of Skye) to Tarbert (Isle of Harris) with Caledonian MacBrayne. From Tarbert, you can continue your journey to Calanais by car, bus, or taxi (approximately 39 miles). 

Three routes to choose from, flying into Stornoway Airport (Isle of Lewis) with Loganair.

Free onsite parking is available at the visitor centre, with a variety of spaces including 6 EV charging spaces, 4 accessible spaces, 33 general spaces, and 10 bicycle racks.

Our gift shop offers a curated collection of local crafts and products while also showcasing the unique culture and heritage of the Outer Hebrides.

Cafe

Open Monday to Saturday.  Serving hot food until 3PM and after 3PM only light refreshments.  A range of takeaway options is also available. Please note that we do not take reservations. Indoor and outdoor seating available.

Toilets

There are 16 toilets at the centre open during visitor centre opening hours. Baby changing facilities are available. Toilets will be available out of opening hours for specific events.

Dog-friendly

Well behaved dogs on leads will be welcome in the Visitor Centre. Due to the fragile nature of some of our exhibits, only assistance dogs will be allowed in the exhibition space. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the site.

Inclusivity and accessibility are central to the Calanais Visitor Centre and our team. Please note assistance dogs are welcome throughout the site.

You can read our accessibility policy in advance of your visit for more information. Visitors with disabilities may bring an accompanying carer free of charge when paying for a full price ticket. Proof of eligibility will be required.

Wheelchair Accessibility

There is step-free access to the Visitor Centre, including accessible toilets. Our reception, cafe, shop, function room and exhibition area are all wheelchair accessible.

The hill leading from the Visitor Centre to the stones cannot be altered, though we are working towards improving the path’s access. We are currently developing plans for an improved route, which will be subject to planning permission, scheduled monument consent, and detailed costings. We will share further updates as soon as more information becomes available.
